Important uncontrolled urban areas for the development of Amsterdam graffiti. - Article created in 2005 (unpublished). Text and layout by the authors of the book 'Amsterdam graffiti: the Battle of Waterloo'.
——
Amsterdam 2005:
The most important thing off an underground subculture is having a group of likeminded individuals with the abbility to create something completely new, or to recreate something already in existance in such way that it turns into something never seen before. The second most important thing is having a place where these pioneers can nurture and grow their fetuslike skills till it becomes an entity of its own. A place where followers of the subculture gather and have the possibility to learn the tricks of the trade. Where they can study the work of those who came before them and have the possibility to meet the pioneers.
—
The city authority has a 'no-tolerance'-policy in full efect. All uncontrolled urban areas have disapeared and legal painting at daytime is almost impossible, with the exeption of some wooden fences build around construction sites. The city has turned into a yuppie-controlled dull environment where there's no space for controversial artforms anymore.

It shows more than once that the development and rise of the graffiti culture did not only take place in the larger Dutch cities, but was experienced full and intense by young people from all over the country. A good job done by @morondoa giving insights and add value to the graffiti culture with this document!

AMSTERDAM today – The graffiti ‘D.D.T. 666’ is the only remaining original Dr. Rat (Ivar Vičs, 21 May 1960 – 29 June 1981) graffiti in Amsterdam. For that reason it was recently restored by the highly experienced restorers Antonio and Amarilla Rava on the initiative of Stadsdeel Zuid of the municipality of Amsterdam. The work is a unique expression of the turbulent seventies and eighties in Amsterdam, when young people openly resisted the establishment and squatters and punks made themselves heard in the city.

Remarkable unknown facts in an article about art in the sprinter trains of the Dutch Railway company (NS):

In 1985, the NS takes more and more sprinters into service. Keith Haring is approached for the decoration, who by then had only left his mark in the Netherlands in The Hague and Rotterdam in private circles. Haring makes a design for the 'inside' of the train. For unknown reasons the design it is not implemented in the trains.

Sporen 3 - Een zoektocht langs de resten van de IJmuider spoorlijn. By Wim Wegman.

For us a nice book that takes us back to the cradle of the DGL. We believe that the mentality, pleasure and passion we are dealing with now is to be traced back directly to where we come from. IJmuiden, the garden where the seeds were planted, the roots attached and the weeds pulled. The origin of the roads we walked...

Part of Khan, Disz, Sok, Poet, Berlin 1993.

“In 1993, we became in closer contact and one day Disz said to me, that he wanted to paint a train in Berlin. First, I was thinking about if maybe it would be a problem for him to escape, if there is a raid in the Yard, because he was kind of a old man. But we, together with SOK (RCB-TFB) and Khan (GHS), then took him with us. Then in the Yard while painting, I think he was getting New York flashbacks, because he started to tell me that he likes to take a break and to lay down on the gras over there to smoke a cigarette and to deliberate about his Piece. I said to him: o.k. but after the cigarette you have to finish your piece so that we can leave the Yard, they are still workers running around on the other side of the train. After finishing the pieces, due to the workers we decided to take pictures later and catch the train, early on the line. But the end-to-end went never on the line, so we just walked inside the Buff, about 10 in the morning but we already came to late. Just D I S from DISZ was readable and the top of KHAN's piece on the left. The rest had already be buffed. They had some students to clean the train. The lady in red said: It looked really beautiful, like Art.” Poet, Berlin.

Amsterdam 1986- Keith starts painting at ten thirty in the morning. Freehand, he paints a kind of sea dinosaur with a figure on its back. He starts at the belly and works up from the right to the forelegs and the head. Because of the wall’s porous brick composition, the paint is absorbed into the surface and he needs to keep thickly reapplying the paint to achieve the thick, unbroken white line. When he’s finished, he signs the piece at the bottom: three Andreas crosses and KH86. By six o’clock, the work is completed.

2022 - yesterday's visit to holy ground - part 2. A step back in time. A bygone era has been preserved under the traffic square at the Mr. Visserplein a.ka Waterlooplein, Amsterdam. A part of the history of our graffiti culture is still there...

For years (1978-2003) the abandoned underpasses and the wastelands surrounding the Waterlooplein and Mr. Visserplein were a thorn in the flesh of the City of Amsterdam. At the same time, though, this area attracted graffiti writers from all over Europe and turned into a pilgrimage place. In the beginning of 2003 the legendary ‘Waterlooplein Hall of Fame’ was forced to disappear when a gentrification project called ‘Tun Fun’ turned the area into a playground for kids. Which, ultimately, put an end to all ‘battles’ graffiti artists fought amongst themselves, against local authorities and the city police. It particularly put a stop to the battle between the various styles of graffiti art that dominated the walls of the underpasses of the Mr. Visserplein for a period of 25 years.

In September 1982 Lee exhibited his work in the Amsterdam gallery ‘American Graffiti’. The gallery was founded by Barbara Farber and specialized in international art by young artists, mainly from New York City. The graffiti writer Lee Quiñones, who is also participating in the world art exhibition Documenta 1982 in Kassel is showing graffiti on canvas for the first time in the gallery. The American exhibits in Amsterdam together with Jenny Holzer who makes announcements on signs made of different materials. Together they also create work on the walls of the Amsterdam canals and during a trip to Rotterdam. A piece by Lee Quiñones has been spraypainted against the underside of a staircase leading to Rotterdam’s Lijnbaan Centre. The mural was commissioned by the Rotterdam Art Foundation.
